What Is Pediatric Behavior Management & Sedation Dentistry?
At Kids 360 Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that every child is unique, and so are their comfort levels when visiting the pediatric dentist. Pediatric behavior management involves using gentle, reassuring techniques to help children feel safe, calm, and confident during their dental visits. From non-threatening language to the “tell-show-do” approach, Dr. Appareddy and her team are experts in guiding children through care in a way that reduces fear and builds trust.
When traditional behavior techniques aren’t enough, we may recommend sedation dentistry for kids to ensure a positive, stress-free experience. Sedation is tailored to your child’s needs and can range from mild relaxation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to more advanced options like oral moderate sedation, IV sedation, or treatment under general anesthesia at Texas Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Appareddy holds privileges.
What is Our Goal?
Our goal is always to take the most conservative and compassionate approach possible, creating an experience that supports both your child’s oral health and emotional well-being.
Pediatric Sedation Options We Offer

Nitrous Oxide
Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a very mild and safe form of sedation used in dentistry. It is administered through a mask which will sit on your child’s nose and carry air to provide relaxation during dental procedures. Your child will remain alert but will have a happy feeling. He or she may not actually laugh or giggle. When the procedure is complete, the nitrous oxide will be turned off and your child will breathe in pure oxygen for about 5 minutes to clear out any remaining gas. There are no prolonged sedative effects when your child leaves our office after the procedure.

Oral Moderate Sedation
Oral sedation offered in our pediatric dental office is a moderate level of sedation given to children for whom nitrous oxide alone does not provide sufficient relaxation. A liquid medication would be given 60 minutes prior to the start of the procedure. This sedative would be given in addition to nitrous oxide. If your child is a candidate for oral sedation, Dr. Appareddy will provide more information as well as pre-op and post-op instructions. Following these instructions carefully is essential to ensure your child’s safety and a smooth recovery.

IV Sedation
Some children are not candidates for nitrous oxide or oral sedation because of level of anxiety, age, or extent of required treatment. For these patients, we offer treatment with IV sedation administered by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist. If your child is a candidate, this treatment would be offered in-office. If IV sedation is recommended, Dr. Appareddy will provide a full explanation of the process, along with specific pre-op and post-op instructions that must be carefully followed to support a safe and successful pediatric dental care visit.
Treatment Under General Anesthesia
Dr. Appareddy has held medical staff privileges at Texas Children’s Hospital for more than 10 years. If your child is not a candidate for in-office IV sedation or if you would be more comfortable with your child being seen in a hospital setting, Dr. Appareddy can provide comprehensive treatment under general anesthesia in the OR.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is pediatric behavior management in dentistry?
Behavior management refers to the gentle strategies we use to help children feel comfortable and confident during their dental visits. At our pediatric dental office, we use age-appropriate language, explain procedures step-by-step, and create a calm environment to reduce fear and build trust.
How can I prepare my child for their dental appointment?
It all starts at home! Use positive language when talking about the pediatric dentist, and avoid sharing your own dental fears. Children can sense anxiety, so keeping calm and upbeat can make a big difference. You’re also welcome to schedule an office tour before your child’s appointment to help them feel familiar and at ease.
Does every child need sedation for dental treatment?
No. Many children are able to complete dental procedures using only behavior management techniques without any sedation. Sedation is only recommended when a child is highly anxious, very young, has special needs, or requires complex treatment.
What is nitrous oxide, and is it safe for my child?
Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas”, is a mild and very safe form of sedation. It helps your child feel calm and relaxed while remaining awake. The effects wear off quickly after the procedure, and your child will breathe pure oxygen to clear the gas before leaving the office.
What is Oral Conscious Sedation?
If nitrous oxide alone does not provide sufficient relaxation, Dr. Appareddy may recommend oral moderate sedation, which involves giving your child a liquid medication in the office in addition to nitrous oxide. Detailed instructions will be provided for before and after the visit.
When is IV sedation recommended?
IV sedation is typically recommended for children with high levels of anxiety, younger patients, or those needing more extensive dental treatment. This method is administered in our office by a board-certified anesthesiologist, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
Can my child be treated under general anesthesia?
Yes. If your child is not a candidate for in-office sedation or you prefer a hospital setting, Dr. Appareddy offers comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia at Texas Children’s Hospital, where she holds medical privileges.
